Within the United Nations, each member state has sovereign equality and must obey the Charter. Countries must try to settle their differences by peaceful means instead of war and they must avoid using force or threatening to use force against another country in the UN. The UN is not under any circumstances allowed to interfere with the domestic affairs of any country, no matter how dire in need of help they are, unless they ask for the help. All the countries involved in the United Nations should try to assist it in any way possible.

Currently there are 192 members of the United Nations. They meet at the General assembly which is the closest thing to a world parliament. Each country, no matter how big or small has one single vote, however none of the decisions taken by the assembly are binding. However, the decisions made by the General Assembly are still taken very seriously by the governments of the world.

In recent times the United Nations, as well as being an advocate for peace in the world, wants to retain friendly relations between all nations involved. Together all these countries are working toward a common goal of helping people live better lives, eliminate poverty, disease and illiteracy in the world, to stop environmental destruction and to encourage respect for each other’s rights and freedoms. They also want to be able to help other nations achieve these goals.

During the second world war, United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt devised the name “United Nations” on Janurary 1, 1942 in the first “Declaration By United Nations” when representatives from 26 countries around the world pledged their governments to continue fighting the Axis Powers (Germany, Italy and Japan). By April 25, 1945 there were 50 countries who had representatives in the United Nations and from April to June they drew up the United Nations Charter during the United Nations Conference on Internattional Organization. This charter was signed on June 25, 1945 by the representatives from 50 countries and Poland later signed to become part of the original 51 countries involved in the United Nations.
